Responsible Use: The "Less Is More" Principle
It's counterintuitive, but it's the most important rule in kratom pharmacology: higher doses often produce worse effects. Understanding the bell-curve dose response can save you from nausea, the "wobbles," and rapid tolerance buildup.
The Bell Curve Explained
Kratom's active alkaloids, primarily mitragynine, exhibit a biphasic dose response:
- Low doses (1-3g): Stimulation, mood elevation, focus via adrenergic and dopaminergic activity
- Moderate doses (3-5g): Analgesia, anxiolysis via mu-opioid receptor activity
- High doses (5g+): Sedation, nausea, dizziness—the "wobbles" (nystagmus)
Involuntary eye movement (nystagmus), nausea, and dizziness caused by excessive dose. Usually resolves in 2-4 hours. Prevention: stay under 5g, especially with potent strains like Super Green or White Horn.
Optimal Dosing by Goal
| Goal | Dose Range | Best Strains |
|---|---|---|
| Energy/Focus | 2-4g | White MD, Green Thai |
| Pain Relief | 3-5g | Red Bali, Red MD |
| Anxiety/Social | 2-3g | Yellow Vietnam, Green Malay |
| Sleep/Relaxation | 4-6g | Red Bentuangie, Red Aceh |
Tolerance Prevention
The "less is more" principle also applies to frequency. Daily high-dose use leads to rapid tolerance and dependence. Strategies:
- Strain rotation: Alternate vein colors (white → green → red → yellow) to prevent receptor downregulation
- Days off: 1-2 non-consecutive days per week resets tolerance
- Agmatine sulfate: NMDA antagonist supplement that potentiates kratom and slows tolerance (500mg 30min prior)
- Minimum effective dose: Find your lowest working dose and stick to it
The "Sweet Spot" Method
Start at 2g. Wait 45 minutes. If effects are insufficient, add 0.5g. Repeat until desired effects achieved. Do not exceed 5g in a single session. Your "sweet spot" is the minimum dose that produces full effects—usually 2.5-3.5g for most users.
